FAQ

The hard questions, answered first.

What you’ll want to know before signing up, laid out plainly. This is also where we define our terms.

Getting started & anonymity

Do I need my real name or a face photo?

No. Meet anonymously and keep in touch anonymously. You choose who sees your photos. If you set “Prefer mutual reveal”, people who haven’t registered photos can’t send you requests, so your photos are never seen one-sidedly.

Related terms: Step Signal, Photo reveal request

Do I have to fill in my whole profile to use the app?

No. Fill in what you can and save partway. You choose who sees each item, so writing something doesn’t mean everyone can see it.

Which purpose should I choose? Can I change it later?

Choose all that apply from the three (Meet now / Meet new people / Find a partner). If you haven’t decided, choose “Undecided”. You can change it at any time: Discovery (the first screen when you open the app) → “My Page” tab at the bottom → [Change] in the “Purpose” box at the top (or “📝 Basic profile” → “Edit basic profile” at the top → “Purpose” in “🎯 Purpose & relationship”). The “Purpose” box suggests profile items worth filling in for your purpose.

Related terms: Purpose

I don’t drink, but I’m fine going out for drinks. How should I set this?

Choose “Don’t drink, but drinking occasions are OK” under “Drinking” in your basic profile. People filtering, or searching by their “preference about drinking”, will find you with this answer. People who choose “Don’t drink” or “Don’t drink, but drinking occasions are OK” don’t see “How often you drink” in the drinking details.

How can I choose visibility?

There are five levels for each item: show to everyone / show only to matches / show only when you both open the same item / show only to this person / show to no one. You can change them later.

If I change my visibility settings, will I lose access to items people approved for me?

Only the item you changed is affected. While you don’t show an item, you can’t see the other person’s same item either (you can only see items you show each other). Other approved items stay visible. There’s no need to withdraw approvals or “undo close”.

A locked row says “Visible when you match with the same setting (mutual item reveal)”. How can I see it?

You need to set that item to the same “mutual item reveal” as the other person, and you both need to have matched. Setting your own item to “everyone” won’t show you theirs.

Is there an age limit?

Not available to anyone under 18.

Staying hidden

I don’t want people I know to find me.

There are four ways: “Hide from people nearby”, which removes you from the nearby list; “Safe Zone”, which hides you by place; “Stealth Mode”, which hides you by day and time; and “Hide online status (per person)”, which hides you from people you choose. You can combine them.

Related terms: Safe Zone, Hide online status (per person)

What’s the difference between Safe Zone and Stealth Mode?

Whether you vanish by place or by time. Safe Zone hides you while you’re within a radius around your home or workplace. Stealth Mode hides you only during the days and time slots you choose. Neither is about choosing people; both switch automatically, and you can use both at once. Scheduling Stealth Mode is available on Aurora and above.

Related terms: Safe Zone

Does the map show my exact location?

No. Others see only a position rounded to the center of a grid square of roughly 1 km. Where you are inside the square can’t be known. While you’re inside a Safe Zone or Stealth Mode, you don’t appear on the map or in lists.

Related terms: Veil, Safe Zone

If I want to take a break for a while, do I have to leave?

No. With “Take a break”, you can step away without leaving, keeping your profile, photos, trust and connections (no need to re-enter anything when you come back). Choose it from My Page → “⚙️ Settings” → “🌙 Take a break”. It’s also offered first when you open “Delete account & data” (available 30 days after you sign up). During the break you don’t appear on other people’s screens, and push notifications and emails stop (important messages, such as when your break is about to expire, still arrive). To come back, open the app and tap once. Two years after the last day you opened the app, the leaving process starts (no deadline while you keep a paid plan; if you subscribe through a store, automatic renewal continues during a break). If you just don’t want to be found in search, use “Stay out of search” (you can separately turn off the three searches: by name, by words in your bio, and by your private bio); to just disappear from the nearby list, use “Hide from people nearby”.

Whose searches will the words on my profile match?

It depends on the visibility of that field. Fields visible to everyone match anyone’s keyword search. Match-only fields match only the searches of your matches; request-reveal fields only those of people who have approved that item with you; mutual-item-reveal fields only those of people you’ve matched with who have the same setting. Private fields match no one’s search. People who aren’t allowed to see a field aren’t told it matched. People you’ve blocked, or who have blocked you, never match. Nicknames, contact IDs and social media IDs are not included in this search.

Related terms: Where you’re active

There’s one specific person I don’t want to see me.

With “Hide online status (per person)”, you can hide your online status from the people you choose. You can also choose people who won’t see your upcoming plans. Before cutting them off completely, there’s also “Soft block”, which lets you keep your distance without telling them. Meanwhile, you don’t get notifications from them.

Related terms: Hide online status (per person), Soft block, Connection Control

I don’t want people to see my screen when I open the app in public.

“Disguise mode” switches the screen to look like a weather, map or transit app. It starts OFF. To use it, turn on “Disguise mode” in “🛡️ Shield Center” at the very top of the app’s settings. Once it’s on, tap the same spot on the screen quickly three times to switch (taps on things that react, such as buttons or the map, don’t count). To switch back, tap the same spot quickly three times again, or long-press the title at the very top of the screen (on the map, the search box) for about a second. While disguised, incoming VortAR calls don’t appear on the screen (they’re kept as missed calls).

Related terms: Disguise mode

Will my phone number be shared during calls?

No. You talk only inside the app. Calls start with voice. On calls placed from Signal by someone on Aurora or above, video flows only when you both turn on “📹 Video ON” (it starts OFF, and stops immediately if either of you turns it OFF). Calls from anonymous conversations and Live Warp are voice only. VortAR never records audio or video.

Related terms: 📹 Video call

Searching & meeting

Nobody near me shares my interests.

There’s no default search radius, so you can search by interests instead of distance. You can connect with people far away just as easily as with people nearby. Add distance to your conditions only when you want to narrow by it.

Related terms: Discovery

Can I search as many times as I like?

The Nearby, Nationwide and Recommended lists can be viewed as often as you like. The “Search” button for names and profile words is limited to 30 a day on Free and 100 on paid plans (loading the next page doesn’t count; it resets at midnight Japan time). There’s no limit on the number of results. On very busy days, for safety, we may temporarily pause searches on Free only (searches and lists on paid plans don’t stop; it resets at midnight).

How is the order of recommendations decided?

With “⚙ Change what matters to you”, choose up to two from body type, age, height and weight, looks, position, interests, purpose and closeness (all plans). People who fit your choices are introduced first. Unless you choose “closeness”, distance isn’t used to order recommendations.

Related terms: Navigator, Maybe later

How many recommendations do I get per day?

Free gets 3 a day, Aurora 6, Star 12, Galaxy 20, and Universe has no limit. Recommendations are a set number of people chosen to fit your preferences and purpose. Lists of people nearby or by conditions (“Browse”) can be viewed without limit, even for free.

Related terms: Navigator

What is Warp?

A feature for posting when and where you’re going, in advance. People interested in that place and time can find you. Instead of who’s nearby right now, you find who you can meet next. You can save places you visit often.

Related terms: Warp, Future Warp, Live Warp

What is a “meet-up plan”?

A feature for sending an invitation with a date, time and place from a Future Warp. The short check-in after you meet is never shown to the other person. All that remains is the fact that you met, and a record of trust.

Related terms: Meet-up plan, Meet record

What’s the difference between Spark and Ignite?

Spark is a quiet signal that just says you’re interested. Ignite is your top-pick slot and reaches the other person for sure, even past their message filters. Ignite slots increase every month depending on your plan, and unused ones roll over to the next month.

Related terms: Spark, Ignite

How do I register a venue or group?

Apply on the “Register a group or venue” screen via Discovery (the first screen when you open the app) → 🔍 at the top → “Community” tab → [Apply to register] (you can also open it from My Page → ⚙️ Settings → 🏘️ Community settings). Once approved, it appears on the map and in the “Community” list.

Related terms: Community

What you can’t write & photos

What is Secret Filter?

A way to register, privately, what you’re open to and looking for that you can’t write on a public profile, and search with it. Conditions such as married, discreet, or coming as a couple stay where only you can read them. Registering conditions and checking the number of matches are free.

Related terms: Secret Filter

When are the conditions I registered shown to others?

Matching happens only on the server. Only when conditions match and you both agree is that item revealed, at the same time. Until then, no one can see it. Even our team’s screens show nothing beyond whether there was a match.

Related terms: Secret Filter

Can others see what’s in my intimate preferences?

The items you choose are not shown to others. Your profile only says “Intimate preferences: set”. The exception is the three fields you write yourself (the “Other” and “Comment” fields for each item, up to 30 characters each); only these three are visible to others as written. Choose who can see them with “Who can see this” at the top of the screen (matches only / matches with the same setting only / people who have approved each other only / no one; “matches only” at first). Changing it from “Intimate preferences” in Visibility settings does the same. If a field you wrote contains words indicating a minor, they’re automatically masked as “○” (they look the same on your own screen).

How does mutual photo reveal work?

For main photos, if someone whose own photo is private sends a request, it’s always a mutual reveal (you can’t ask to see theirs while keeping yours hidden). For a Secret album, propose pairs of what you’d like to see and what you’ll show — “one photo ⇔ one photo” or “set ⇔ set” (up to 3 pairs). In both cases, everything is revealed at the same moment the other person accepts — not a single photo before that. A reveal closes automatically after 72 hours without messages. If you haven’t viewed it when it closes, you can still view it once within 72 hours.

Related terms: Photo reveal request

Can I send a photo reveal request without registering a face photo?

It depends on the other person’s setting. If they’ve set “Prefer mutual reveal”, register your own photo first. Otherwise, choose from three: ① register a photo and make it a mutual reveal, ② attach one photo to the request, or ③ request one-sidedly without a photo. An attached photo reaches only that person and isn’t added to your profile. On their screen it stays blurred until they tap it. It disappears when the request ends (approved, withdrawn, or after the 14-day limit).

Related terms: Photo reveal request

Can I cancel a reveal request I sent?

You can withdraw it at any time before it’s approved: “My Page” tab at the bottom → [Photo] next to your nickname → 🔒 at the top right (Photo reveal management) → [Withdraw] under “Sent (awaiting approval)”. Withdrawing doesn’t restore that day’s sending allowance. Requests with no answer for 14 days are withdrawn automatically.

Related terms: Photo reveal request

How do my private photos look to others?

The content isn’t visible, but an icon shows what kind of photo it is, and a red “SECRET” band is placed over it. You don’t need to explain what you’re hiding. Even after a reveal, photos set to private keep the same band, so you can tell which photos are being shown only to you.

Related terms: Photo reveal request

Can I change the icon that represents me in lists?

Yes. In My Page → [Photo] next to your nickname → “Sub photos”, check “Use as mini icon” on the first one (slot 2), and that photo becomes your icon in lists and on cards. Even if your main photo is private, this photo is visible to everyone. Uncheck it or delete the photo to go back.

Safety & trust

If someone blocks me first, does our conversation disappear too?

No. Your past conversation stays on your screen. It’s designed so that the evidence can’t be wiped out by what the other person does.

Related terms: Block

Can I check that someone really is who they say they are?

People verified with an ID document get 🆔, and you can search for 🆔 people only (verification is optional). Even when talking anonymously, verified people show the 🆔 mark (while few people are verified, people can choose whether to show it). People verified by phone also show 📞, but only if they choose. Our team deletes document images once the review is over and keeps only the result, “verified”.

Related terms: ID verification

If someone blocks me, can I still get help with a problem?

Yes. Records of conversations where a block occurred are kept for 90 days, and the person who was blocked can also report from “⚠️ Report suspicious behavior” at the top right of the conversation. Reported conversations are stored where only our team can see them, and we respond to inquiries from the police and other authorities.

Related terms: Block

Can I lift a block later?

On Aurora and above, you can lift it (prices are shown in the app). Blocks on Free are permanent; to lift one, you need to upgrade your plan. On Aurora and above, you can choose “Permanent” or “4 months” when blocking. A 4-month block is lifted automatically when it ends. “Undo” right after blocking is free for everyone. Neither the block nor its lifting, manual or automatic, is ever shown to the other person.

Related terms: Block

What happens when I report something?

Long-press a worrying message to report it right there. As a rule, we review reported content within 24 hours.

Who can see my Trust Score?

No one. It isn’t shown even to you, because it isn’t meant for competing over points. What’s shown is only the fact that you’ve been verified, for example by phone or ID. The app tells you in one line what to do next to build more trust. In search, you can narrow to “🌟 Highly trusted” people (whether someone pays doesn’t count; available once enough members and interaction records have built up).

Related terms: Trust Score, ID verification

What is a “recommendation from a trusted person”?

A separate, independent mark, apart from the score. It only goes to people with a real, ongoing relationship. It’s never added to the score, and so it carries more weight than the score.

Related terms: Mama’s recommendation

Pricing

How much can I do for free?

Searching, browsing and filtering are all free. Distance and filters are never limited by rank. Registering Secret Filter conditions and checking the number of matches are free too. Paid plans only add how much you can say and how many you can open.

Related terms: Secret Filter, VortAR Free

Until when is the 20% off for the first year of annual plans available?

It ends when the first 500 members sign up or 90 days after the official launch, whichever comes first. From the second year, the regular annual price applies.

Can I cancel?

Monthly plans can be changed or cancelled at any time, through the store you subscribed with.

Do unused Ignite slots expire?

No. Unused slots roll over to the next month. For the first 30 days after you sign up, every plan gets a +4 bonus.

Warp

Warp

In plain words: People you can meet

Pick a place and time, put your pin on the map, and invite people you could meet.

Warp is VortAR’s core feature: it combines moving your pin and putting out an invitation. Set a place and a date and time, and people coming there at that time can find you on the map or in the Warp list. How many Warps you can post, how far ahead, and in how many places at once depend on your rank, but viewing Warps is free.

Related screens: Map, Warp list
Related terms: Live Warp, Future Warp, Warp list, Boost Warp, Meet-up plan

Live Warp

A short line posted around where you are now, for 3 hours. A type of Warp.

A short line of up to 50 characters, posted for 3 hours around where you are now (a position rounded to a square of about 1 km), without setting a place or time. It uses its own slot, separate from Future Warp slots: you can have only one at a time, and posting again ends the previous one. You can post anonymously, in which case Step Signal is the only way to get in touch. If you want to set a place and time, switch to a Future Warp with “Make it a Warp”.

Related screens: “LIVE Now!” in the Warp tab, Warp list
Related terms: Warp, Future Warp, 🌙 After dark, Step Signal

Future Warp

A Warp where you choose the place and start time yourself. The counterpart of Live Warp.

A Warp where you set the place and time yourself; the start can be chosen from 1 hour ahead (to post right now, use Live Warp). Stays are in 30-minute steps, and the maximum length and how many days ahead you can post depend on your rank (Free: 2 hours, 7 days ahead; Universe: 12 hours, 90 days ahead). Changing the date, time or place after posting uses the same count as posting once (cancelling does not give the count back).

Related screens: Map, Warp list
Related terms: Warp, Live Warp, Meet-up plan

🌙 After dark

One of the main Warp categories, for adult meetups here and now.

One of the main Warp categories (🍽 Food & drink / 🎨 Hobbies & sports / 🎪 Events / 🌙 After dark / 💬 Communication), shared by Live Warp and Future Warp. After choosing it you can pick detailed preferences, but you can also post without choosing anything (nothing is selected the first time you post). The items you choose are visible to people who open that Warp only while it lasts (for a Future Warp, until its period ends), even if they are private on your profile, and you can choose whether to show just the headings or the details too (headings only at first; they are visible on anonymous Warps as well, but your name, photos and profile are not shown). What others have seen on their screens, such as photos, cannot be erased.

Warp list

A list of Warps in date order, for finding who will be where, when.

While the map lets you search by place, the Warp list arranges Warps by date and time so you can find “who will be there, at that time”. Viewing is free, with no time limit. Tap 👁 on someone’s row to hide it for 24 hours; long-press it for a soft block.

Related screens: Map, “Future” in the Warp tab
Related terms: Warp, Quick hide, Soft block

Edit your Warps

A screen to change or cancel the date, place or note of Warps you’ve placed.

A screen listing the upcoming Warps you’ve placed. Open it from 📋 at the top right of the Warp tab, and tap a row to change the date, place or note, or to cancel it. Changing the date or place uses one Warp, and cancelling doesn’t give the count back (manage a Live Warp you’re running now from “LIVE Now!”).

Related screens: “📋 Edit your Warps” at the top right of the Warp tab

Saved for later

Keep Warps you’re interested in together at the top of the Warp list.

Tap [🔖 Save for later] on a Warp you opened on the map or in Warp details to keep it. Saved Warps are gathered under “🔖 Saved for later” at the very top of Warp tab → “Future” → “List”, and cancellations and endings are reflected there. This is separate from ⚓ Anchor (people) and ⚓ Spot (places).

Related screens: Warp list
Related terms: Warp list, Warp alert

Watch list

A row showing Warps from people you’ve added to Anchor or Ignite.

At the top of the Warp list, Future Warps from people you’ve added to ⚓ Anchor, Ignite or Radar List appear in date order. It’s a display only, not a notification; anonymous Warps and people who have chosen not to show you their Warps don’t appear.

Meet-up plan

Set a date, time and place from a Warp and fix the day you’ll meet.

Send “🤝 Propose a meet-up” from a Warp’s details; when the other person accepts, the plan is set and a pin for it appears on your map (visible only to you). On the day, after the arrival button (a location check), scan each other’s codes with the camera or enter them by hand to record that you met. If the codes don’t match up, a record is still kept, but it counts less toward your Trust Score. Your plans are listed under “🤝 Meet-up plans” in the Signal tab. The number of proposals you can make per day depends on your rank, and you can buy more (prices are shown in the app).

Related terms: Future Warp, Meet record, Trust Score

Warp alert

A notification when a Warp matching your places or conditions is posted.

A notification you get when someone posts a Future Warp at a ⚓ Spot (a favorite place) or in an area; you can narrow it with filters. Anonymous Warps arrive without revealing who posted them, and filters don’t apply to them (so that their conditions can’t be guessed from whether you were notified). You don’t get Warps from people you’ve blocked or hidden your online status from, or from people who have chosen not to show you their Warps. Past alerts can be reviewed by filtering “Warp” in the 🔔 notification list.

Related screens: Notifications
Related terms: Warp, Warp notice, ⚓ Spot

Warp notice

Let people you’ve met know, one by one, where you plan to Warp next.

A notification that tells specific people about a Warp you plan to make, such as “I’ll be at ◯◯ at 8 pm in 3 days”. It’s free and can be sent for anonymous Warps too (not for Live Warp). You can send it to people you’ve both confirmed meeting, people you’ve exchanged Sparks with, and people who have added you to ⚓ Anchor; when posting a Warp, you can check how many people it will reach. People you’ve exchanged Sparks with and people you’ve met are set to receive your Warps by default (check or change this at My Page → ⚙️ Settings → 🛡️ Shield Center → “📣 Warp notices”). Recipients can choose not to receive notices from specific people (from a notice they received, or on the same “📣 Warp notices” screen).

Notices for anonymous Warps also go into Step Signal conversations. Even if some people don’t receive them, on your screen it looks as if the notice went into every conversation (so that whether someone received it doesn’t reveal their settings, or whether you are keeping your distance from them).

Related screens: Notifications, Shield Center “📣 Warp notices”, Warp confirmation screen
Related terms: Warp, Warp alert, ⚓ Anchor (favorites), Spark

⚓ Spot

A place you’ve saved as a favorite.

A ⚓ Spot is a venue or area you’ve saved as a favorite. When someone posts a Future Warp at a saved place, you get a Warp alert; notifications can be ON, OFF, or follow your security settings (silent while in Stealth Mode or a Safe Zone). Save places from a venue’s details screen or from Settings → “🛡️ Shield Center” → “⚓ Spot”; how many you can save depends on your rank.

Boost Warp

In plain words: Make your Warp stand out

A highlight option: the frame glows and the Warp is shown higher in its time slot.

A paid option to make a Warp stand out: its frame glows and it’s shown higher on the map, in the Warp list, and in “LIVE Now!” in the Warp tab. It comes per hour or as a 3-hour pack, and unused time carries over as your “Boost balance”. You’ll be offered an extension 10 minutes before it ends. For even more visibility, there’s Super Warp. Prices are shown in the app.

Related screens: Warp creation screen
Related terms: Warp, Super Warp

Super Warp

In plain words: Make your Warp stand out

A highlight option with animation that puts the Warp first in its time slot.

The paid option that makes a Warp stand out most. On the map it lights up in turn with animation, and in the Warp list it takes turns at the top of its time slot. It comes per hour or as a 3-hour pack, and unused time carries over as a balance. It can also be added to Live Warps and anonymous Warps. Prices are shown in the app.

Related screens: Warp creation screen
Related terms: Warp, Boost Warp

Boost balance

Your purchased Boost and Super time, kept in minutes.

When you buy Boost Warp or Super Warp, the time is added to separate balances. When you apply it to a Warp, it’s used up to that Warp’s remaining time, and anything left unused, for example because you cancelled, goes back to your balance. Check your balance on the Plans screen, the Warp confirmation screen, and your own Warp’s details.

Connecting

Spark

In plain words: Like

A “like” you send to someone who catches your eye.

Spark is VortAR’s “like” (it’s not a rank name; the free rank is called Free). A Spark sent from a Warp’s invitation screen is called a Warp Spark. How many you can send per day depends on your rank, and you get one more per day once your Trust Score reaches 30 pt. After you run out, you can buy them one at a time or in packs of 5 (prices are shown in the app).

Ignite

In plain words: Top pick

Use one “top pick” slot to single someone out.

Ignite uses one “top pick” slot to single someone out. You can send a Signal to someone you’ve Ignited regardless of their message settings. Removing an Ignite doesn’t give the slot back. Slots increase every month according to your rank, and you can buy more if you need them (prices are shown in the app; purchased slots are added to what you hold and don’t count toward the limit that stops the monthly additions).

Related terms: Spark, Signal

Signal

In plain words: Messages

Messages between users.

Signal is the name for messages (chat) between users. How many new people you can start a conversation with per day depends on your rank (any number of messages to the same person counts as one, and you can message people you’ve exchanged Sparks with without limit). Announcements from our team go to Mission Control, not Signal.

Related screens: Signal tab
Related terms: Step Signal, Mission Control, Ignite

Step Signal

In plain words: Message anonymously

A dedicated conversation for reaching people who haven’t shown their name or photos.

A dedicated way to get in touch with people who haven’t shown their name or photos, such as through anonymous Warps or Secret Filter. You make contact using any ID you choose, in a dedicated chat room, and you can leave at any time. Because you don’t know who the other person is, to stop the conversation you don’t block from a profile; instead use “🚪 Leave” on the conversation screen, or “Fade out conversations under this name” in the ⋮ menu (which can also lead to a soft block).

Neither person’s ID ever reaches the other’s device; you can chat, make voice calls and propose meet-ups entirely within the conversation. If you reveal your profile, the conversation carries over and becomes a regular Signal.

Requests for a mutual reveal or a profile reveal are accepted in the same way whoever the other person is (they don’t reach people with whom there is a block, but it never looks like a refusal). Profile reveal requests are limited to 5 per day in the same conversation.

📹 Video call

Video during a call, only when you both turn it on

Calls start with voice. On calls placed from Signal by someone on Aurora or above, you can switch to video with “📹 Video ON” on the call screen. Video only flows when you both turn it on (it starts OFF, and stops immediately if either of you turns it OFF). The number and length of video calls depend on the caller’s plan (per day: Aurora 1, Star 2, Galaxy 3, Universe 5; 10–15 minutes each; counted within the day’s calls). When time is up, only the video stops and the voice call continues (with an extension, video continues for 15 more minutes; prices are shown in the app). Calls from anonymous conversations and Live Warp are voice only, and VortAR never records or stores video.

On Android, screen recording and screenshots are blocked; on iPhone, the other person’s video is hidden during screen recording or mirroring, and screenshots are notified to the other person. Photos of the screen taken with another device’s camera can’t be prevented, so don’t show anything you don’t want seen.

Beacon reminder

Reminders about Sparks and Signals you haven’t answered yet.

Reminders about Sparks, Warp Sparks, Signals and Step Signals you haven’t answered yet, sent three times: 45 minutes, 5 hours and 20 hours after you received them. If the app wasn’t open when you received one, counting restarts the next time you open it. Replying, blocking or hiding your online status counts as “responded”, and responses to Signals also count toward the “Responsiveness” part of your Trust Score.

Secret Filter

In plain words: Mutual reveal search

A special search where you and matching people are revealed to each other at the same time.

A conditional search for special interests (including specific kinks). Conditions are registered as pairs of “what I do / what I accept in a partner” and are revealed only to matching people, at the same time for both. When few people match, the count is shown as a range such as “fewer than 10”, so you cannot tell who they are. Opening a card leaves only an anonymous note that “someone viewed you via Secret Filter”, and you can message anonymously from the opened card.

Veil

In plain words: Blur your location

Blurs your location so others don’t see your exact distance.

Veil blurs your location. When it’s on, the distance others see is rounded up and differs from the real distance. Distances are shown in the same format for everyone, so no one can tell from the display whether you use Veil. Set it in Settings → “🛡️ Shield Center” → “📍 Location privacy”.

Safe Zone

Soft block

In plain words: Quietly keep your distance

Keep your distance without the other person noticing.

Lets you keep your distance without telling the other person. What they see of you freezes at the moment of the soft block, and you stop getting notifications from them. Use it from profile details, Signal or the notification list, or in the Warp list by long-pressing 👁. It’s different from “Block”, which cuts off contact completely.

You can keep your distance within VortAR without anyone getting hurt (soft block and block). If you want to be left alone, you can spend quiet time even if the other person reaches out.

While it’s on, the other person sees your profile and photos as they were when you turned it on (photos you replace or add afterwards aren’t visible to them). When you turn it off, they see your current profile and photos again.

Block

A block that makes you invisible to each other and stops all contact.

Makes you and the other person invisible to each other and stops all contact (full block). It may take a little while after blocking for lists to update. To keep your distance without them noticing, use a soft block instead. Block from the ⋮ menu on their profile or Signal chat, or from 🚫 on the call screen (for calls where names are shown). You can choose a reason when blocking (optional; never shown to them; you can add or change it within a week of blocking). Fraud, requests for money and the like reach our team directly with “Also report to VortAR”. You can report someone you’ve blocked later from the block list via [⋯] → [Report]. Blocks on Free are permanent. On Aurora and above, you can choose “Permanent” or “4 months (lifted automatically when it ends)” when blocking, and you can lift it partway (prices are shown in the app). “Undo” right after blocking is free for everyone.

Shield Center

In plain words: Safety & privacy

One screen for the settings that protect you: visibility, location, blocks, notifications and more.

Switches the screen to look like another app, such as a weather app.

When someone might see your screen, switch it to look like a weather, map or transit app. It starts OFF and is available only to people who turn on “Disguise mode” in Settings → “🛡️ Shield Center”. Tap the same spot on the screen quickly three times to switch; to switch back, tap the same spot three times again, or long-press the title at the very top for about a second. Taps on things that react, such as buttons or the map, don’t count.

Photo reveal request

Ask someone to show you their private photos.

Ask someone to show you their face photo or Secret album photos (Frame 1 and Frame 2 one photo at a time; a set as a whole). Once approved, you can view them for 72 hours (each Signal exchange extends this to 72 hours from then). A reveal closes automatically after 72 hours without messages, and anyone who hasn’t viewed it yet can view it once more. Requests with no answer are withdrawn automatically after 14 days, and the sender can withdraw them at any time before that. If you set your own main photo back to private, pending requests for your main photo (except mutual reveal proposals) are withdrawn. How many you can send is set by a daily allowance, and you can buy more once it’s used up (unlimited on Universe; prices are shown in the app; withdrawing doesn’t restore that day’s allowance). This is separate from an “access request” for profile items, with its own allowance and price.

Trust

Trust Score

A score, separate from rank, that adds perks as trust builds up.

A trust score on a separate axis from paid ranks, with a maximum of 500 pt. It builds up through a fuller profile, keeping meet-up times, responding to Signals within 24 hours (by replying, blocking or hiding your online status), ratings after meeting and so on, and perks such as more Sparks and more footprint views increase with your score. The score is never shown to anyone (not even to you), but verification and 🏅 marks are shown to others. Once enough members and interaction records have built up, search can be narrowed to “🌟 Highly trusted” (the top people by trust, excluding anything paid).

ID verification

Confirms who you are with 📱 phone number and 🆔 documents.

There are two kinds of verification: 📱 phone verification (enter a code sent by SMS; available on Aurora and above) and 🆔 document verification (send an ID document and a selfie; our team reviews and approves or rejects it). The images you send are used only for the review and deleted after we tell you the result (your phone number isn’t stored in the app’s database either). Verified people get 📱 and 🆔 marks on their profile (anonymous cards show 🆔, and 📞 only if the person chooses; while few people are verified, people can also choose whether to show 🆔), and it counts toward the Trust Score.

Meet record

In plain words: People you met

A record left when you planned to meet and actually met.

Make a meet-up plan (send “🤝 Propose a meet-up” from a Warp’s details and the other person accepts), tap the arrival button at the meeting place on the day, and scan each other’s codes: the meeting is then kept in the [Meet record] tab in History (it isn’t shown to the other person). After meeting, you can answer the questions from [Leave a meet record (4 questions)] in the plan’s details or from the notification that arrives 24 hours after the planned time, and your answers count toward trust (the other person can’t see what you answered). The ★ in the [Meet record] list is the number of your answers that were positive.

How it works: ① Send “🤝 Propose a meet-up” from a Warp’s details (a Warp on the map or in the Warp list) or from a Step Signal conversation (from a Warp, the date, time and place are filled in for you). ② When the other person accepts, the plan is set and a pin for it appears on your map (visible only to you). ③ On the day, from 1 hour before the planned time, tap [Arrived] at the meeting place (your location is checked). ④ Scan each other’s codes with the camera or enter them by hand; the meeting is marked as “met” and kept in the [Meet record] tab in History.

If the codes don’t match up: if you both tapped [Arrived] at the meeting place, it is kept as “met (location only)” about 20 minutes after the planned time (it counts less toward trust).

Answering the questions: after meeting, answer from [Leave a meet record (4 questions)] in the plan’s details (Signal tab → “🤝 Meet-up plans” → [History]), from the notification that arrives 24 hours after the planned time, or from [Leave a meet record] on a “No rating” row in the [Meet record] list in History. The other person can’t see what you answered; it is reflected in the ★ in the list and in trust. If you met someone without a meet-up plan, you can leave a record from [Meet record] on their profile (only with people you’ve been in touch with, and once a day per person). Records left that way also appear in the [Meet record] list as “Left without a meet-up plan” rows.

Masked characters or letter combinations are fine, and it’s separate from your device’s location (you don’t have to fill it in). Choose who can see it under “Where you’re active” in Edit basic profile or in Visibility settings (when you first enter it, everyone is selected). While it’s visible to everyone, it appears under your name on your profile and matches anyone’s keyword search; while it’s limited, for example to matches, it matches only the searches of people allowed to see that field (such as matches).

Mutual reveal on request

A visibility level where you and the people you approve show each other the same items.

Items set to this level are hidden from everyone at first. When someone taps [Request] on a locked item in your profile and you approve, that item becomes visible to both of you at the same time (you can see their same item too). While you don’t show your own same item to them, you can’t see theirs even with an approval. Even after approving, you can close it for each person in “🔐 Access management” in the Shield Center.

How to choose it: Go to My Page → ⚙️ Settings → 🛡️ Shield Center → “👁 Visibility settings” and choose “Mutual reveal on request” for each item (you can also change the same setting in the “👁 Visibility” row on Edit basic profile and on each item’s input screen). Financial info, marital status, who you live with, living outlook, family involvement, lifestyle & values and contact tools start with this setting.

When a request arrives: When someone taps [Request] on your item, you get a notification and can approve it in “🔐 Access management”. Once you approve, only the items you approved (out of those requested) become visible to both of you at the same time (never to just one side). How many requests you can send is set by a daily allowance that depends on your rank.

Showing each other: You can see someone’s item only while your same item is also visible to them (everyone, mutual reveal on request, or matches only with someone you’ve matched). You can’t keep your own item hidden and still see theirs.

To stop: Go to My Page → ⚙️ Settings → 🛡️ Shield Center → “🔐 Access management” → “Profile items” and tap “Close” for that person. Once you close, you immediately lose access to their items (if they haven’t viewed yours yet, they can view them one more time). “Mutual item reveal” is a different level: the item is visible only when you have matched and both set the same item to that same setting, and there are no requests.

Mutual item reveal

A visibility level shown only to matches who set the same item the same way.

Items set to this level are hidden from everyone at first. Only when you and the other person have matched and you both set the same item to “Mutual item reveal” does that item become visible to both of you at the same time (there are no requests or approvals). If they’ve set that item to something else, such as everyone, you can’t see it even after matching.

How to choose it: Go to My Page → ⚙️ Settings → 🛡️ Shield Center → “👁 Visibility settings” and choose “Mutual item reveal” for each item (you can also change the same setting in the “👁 Visibility” row on each item’s input screen; some items don’t offer this setting).

How it differs from mutual reveal on request: with “Mutual reveal on request”, you show each other an item when you approve the other person’s [Request]. “Mutual item reveal” has no requests: it shows the item to both of you automatically when you’ve matched and both set that same item the same way. In both cases, you can’t see someone’s item while you don’t show them yours.

To stop: change the visibility to another setting. From then on it no longer works as a mutual item reveal (your item is shown according to the new setting).

“Toki ni yori” (depends on the time)

For people whose fit as top or bottom changes with time or partner.

“Toki ni yori” is the choice for people whose fit as tachi (top) or uke (bottom) changes with the partner, their mood or health, their age, or changes in their life. Where “riba” (versatile) means “I can do both,” “toki ni yori” means “I lean one way right now, but that may change.” It isn’t only position: some people find that the gender they’re attracted to, or how they understand their own gender (gender identity), shifts over the years, and that’s not unusual. When things change, you can choose again on your profile at any time.

Everyone changes differently: Some people shift slowly over many years; others change with the partner they’re seeing or how they feel at the time. Some enjoy both with a steady partner but lean one way in other situations. There’s no right answer, and choosing what feels closest to you right now is enough.

Attraction and gender identity, too: The gender you’re attracted to (sexual orientation) and how you understand your own gender (gender identity) aren’t always the same for life. Some people realize things as adults, some feel differently as the years go by, and some never change. Changing and not changing are both natural, and neither is something other people can make happen to you. You can change your sexual orientation and gender identity at any time under My Page → “📝 Basic profile” → “🏳️‍🌈 Community & lifestyle,” and choose who can see them.

How it’s used in finding people: In compatibility and recommendations, “toki ni yori” is treated like “Undecided,” without assuming either side (it neither raises nor lowers a score). You can also look for “toki ni yori” people with the Position filter on the nearby list. If you clearly lean one way right now, choosing that position makes it easier for people whose wishes match to find you.
